The five emergencies

Choose one, answer three or four questions, and the file is ready before the kettle boils.

• ·My child caught me moving it: a promotion, not a lie — the certificate that makes them a Keeper of the Secret
• ·I need tonight’s idea: one idea from a bank of nineteen, matched to your energy and what is within reach
• ·The elf is arriving: the arrival letter, with the don’t-touch rule and no promise you cannot keep
• ·The elf is leaving: the goodbye letter, warm and short, with the line about being good left out

How the ideas are chosen

You tick what is in the house — a mug, cereal, string, a sock, a torch — and say how much energy is left: thirty seconds, a minute, or five with coffee. The idea you get needs nothing you did not tick and never more effort than you offered. Every idea in the bank follows the rules on our free guide: no mess you have to clean before work, nothing that only works from one angle, nothing that escalates.

The notes

Every emergency ends with something for the child in the elf’s handwriting, signed with whatever they named it. The arrival and goodbye letters promise nothing about every night and never say be good. The scrap left at a scene says one line, which is all an elf would write.
