Leaving proof that Santa was here

One or two pieces of evidence, and no more: a boot print smudged walking away, a carrot bitten off at an angle. A child who finds the proof has worked it out themselves, which is far harder to argue with than being told.

Santa Was Here is not built yet, so there is nothing on this page to buy. What is available now is the personalized Santa video, which works on the same idea: one specific detail, said out loud, by the one person who should not know it.

The rule that makes it work

Under-do it. One or two pieces of evidence read as real. Five read as staged, and a child who spots the staging loses the whole thing at once.

Everything should look like a by-product of someone being busy, not like a display. Nothing centred, nothing symmetrical, nothing photographed nicely.

What actually holds up

  • A boot print in ash or flour, half-smudged, walking away rather than posed
  • The carrot bitten off at an angle, with the end left behind
  • One sleigh bell on the floor, near the door rather than under the tree
  • The mince pie plate with crumbs, not an empty clean plate
  • A glass with a mouthful left in it, because nobody finishes a drink in a hurry

Timing beats craft

Set it up last, after everything else is done, so it is the freshest thing in the room. Melting snow, warm ash and a still-damp glass all say recent, and recent is the claim you are making.

If you are photographing it, take the picture badly. A slightly blurred, badly lit photo taken at an angle looks like something caught. A clean, well-composed one looks like something arranged.

Questions

How do you make a Santa boot print?

Press a boot into a thin layer of ash, flour or icing sugar and then smudge the edge so it looks walked-through rather than stamped. One print walking away is more convincing than a neat pair.

How much Santa evidence is too much?

More than two pieces. A room full of proof reads as arranged, and children are better at spotting arrangement than adults expect.

Can I buy a Santa Was Here image here?

No. Turning a photo of your room into visual proof of Santa's visit is something we intend to build and have not built. Nothing on this page is for sale. The personalized Santa video is available now.

While you are here

Santa knows more than you think.

Tell Santa the small things nobody else knows, and he will tell them back.
